Textile & Craft Study Tours in India for International Students-A Special Initiative of NIFT

NIFT has emerged as a Centre of excellence & innovation with a distinctly conscious concern for social responsibility. Connecting with the grassroots, the institute has built the ‘Craft Cluster Initiative’ into its curricula that enables the students to work in collaboration with the artisans and weavers from different pockets of India. On one end, the ‘Craft Cluster Initiative’ engages artisans & weavers to broaden their knowledge base and channelize their efforts into more market friendly and profitable ventures. On the other, it promotes a culture of understanding and appreciation of the arts & crafts of India amongst students with a view to provide sustainable solutions to the craft sector.

Based on the request of some of our international partner institutes, NIFT is now extending this initiative to international students. The programme for international students has been developed in four different regions of India viz- West- Gandhinagar, East-Kolkata, North- Rajasthan and South-Bengaluru. The international students would be taken to these regions by NIFT faculty and students would interact with Master Craftsmen and artisans on one to one basis and learn the rigors of the craft. The students will be expected to document and present their learning and will earn four credits on completion of the programme.

The itinerary, cost and timelines for programmes from 4 regions are mentioned in the attached brochures.

This would be great opportunity for international students to not only learn about the traditional Indian crafts but also experience the India's social and cultural heritage. Needless to say that, such experiences  add value to knowledge and creativity of the students and could go a long way in honing  their design sensibilities.

Please share this information with your  Faculty members, international office and students.
