A Loud Shout to Young Design Aficionados

Fashion, as a signifier of societal change, can stimulate contemporary articulations on the dialectics of tradition and modernity in the clothing, textile and craft sectors. What does the future entail? Can fashion balance cultural perspectives, experiential aspects of technology along with sustainable practices? Constant rediscoveries lead to renewed maneuvers, tactics and transformations in fashion. National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) announces the 'Call for Entries' for International Student Design Competition 2018.

The Track
The theme of the competition 'Rediscovering Culture: Transforming Fashion' aims to receive fresh perspectives in the domain of fashion, culture, textiles, crafts, technology and sustainability. The competition provides an interdisciplinary platform to showcase young talent, path-breaking approaches, and futuristic insights through the participating entries. The final entries shall be in static showcase during the International Conference organized by National Institute of Fashion Technology from 31st January - 2nd February 2018 at New Delhi, India.

Design submissions will be in the form of any one of the following:

  • Moving images
  • Installations and mixed - media display
  • Textile art
  • Apparel art
  • Lifestyle product innovation

Important dates to remember
Submission of entries – 29th Sep 2017
Declaration of shortlisted entries – 10th Oct 2017
Final submission of entries – 27th Nov 2017
Announcement of results – 8th Dec 2017

Who can apply?
Current design students (UG & PG level)
Graduates from Class of 2017 (UG & PG level)

Nature of entry
Contestants must participate in individual capacity. Team participation shall not be accepted.

How to apply?
Phase I
(Participating entries)

  • Concept note (200 words approx.)
  • Concept drawings (A3 size, one leaf)
  • Supporting details (Swatches, trims etc., if any)
  • Copy of student ID card
All entries must be uploaded at the conference website http://www.nift.ac.in/conference/index.html
Phase II
(Shortlisted entries)
  • Visuals of actualized design (In accordance with Phase I entry)
  • High-resolution images (JPEG format, resolution 300dpi, individual file size should not exceed 5MB)
  • In case of multiple images, assign a title for each image with your name.
  • Ensure that the images represent the design work clearly.

The jury and evaluation process
The jury panel shall comprise eminent members of Indian fashion industry; fashion design and research experts; and members of the academia.
The evaluation of the entries will be based on the following criteria:
a) Design innovation
b) Originality
c) Clarity in verbal & visual communication
d) Relevance to the theme
e) Compliance with Terms & Conditions
In all matters concerning the course of the competition, including the selection of award winners, the decision of the jury will be final.

Awards
The awards ceremony will take place during the valedictory session on 2nd February 2018, at the conference venue. The best three winners of the competition will receive awards:
First Prize: Cash Award of INR 50,000/-
Second Prize: Cash Award of INR 30,000/-
Third Prize: Cash Award of INR 20,000/-

Participation Fees
No participation fee is involved.

Terms & Conditions

  • All contestants should adhere to the announced deadlines and the Terms & Conditions, failing which the entry will be automatically disqualified.
  • It must be ensured by the contestant that their entries must not infringe on the Intellectual Property Rights of any individual, collection of individuals, or entity.
  • NIFT will not be responsible whether directly or indirectly for any liability, in any matter rising from any violation of copyright law.
  • All the information provided by the contestant is for the purpose of the competition and related exhibitions. By submitting the entries, the contestants agree that the personal data will be retained by NIFT and may be used in conjunction with the competition and related purpose. It may be understood that the contestant/s grant NIFT an irrevocable royalty-free license to use, re- use, publish and re-publish, in whole or in part, in composite or distorted character forms all images or photographs, in any medium, now or hereafter, for publicity purposes.
  • The chosen contestants will bring their actualized design entry for the final showcase at New Delhi. The contestants will bear all incurred expenses relating to travel, boarding & lodging, shipping & insurance of their works (as applicable).
  • During the final showcase at New Delhi, NIFT will exercise maximum care in handling all entries. However, NIFT will assume no liability for any damage or loss of any kind during the exhibition and transportation of the artwork.
