The Craft-Based Design Project (CBDP) undertaken in the Kolhapur Cluster explored the rich tradition of Kolhapuri chappal making, a renowned leather craft of Maharashtra celebrated for its durability, intricate craftsmanship, and cultural significance. The project focused on understanding traditional techniques practiced by artisan communities, including leather processing, pattern development, hand stitching, braiding, embossing, and layered sole construction. Through field interactions, documentation, and hands-on learning, students gained insights into the craft’s historical legacy, production processes, and contemporary challenges.

The project emphasized design-led interventions aimed at bridging traditional craftsmanship with modern market requirements. Students worked closely with artisans to identify opportunities for innovation through product diversification, sustainable material usage, improved functionality, and contemporary aesthetics while preserving the authenticity of the craft. The experience highlighted the importance of cultural preservation, responsible design practices, and artisan collaboration in developing meaningful products for present-day consumers.
