The Craft

leather is produced through a traditional vegetable tanning process. Skins are soaked, limed, washed, delimed, and treated with natural avaram bark liquor. The leather is then stretched, oiled, dried, and softened through staking before being trimmed and sorted, producing flexible, durable leather with a distinctive natural finish.

The Place

leather production is concentrated in Tamil Nadu, particularly in Trichy, Dindigul, and parts of North Arcot. During the colonial period, these regions developed major tanning centres due to strategic locations, railway connectivity, and availability of quality raw hides and Avaram bark. Trichy and Dindigul continue this traditional tanning practice.

The Product

leather is used to create handcrafted products such as bags, boxes, puppets, and other leather goods. For bags and boxes, leather is soaked, washed, stretched, dried, marked, cut, embossed, and assembled. Embossing and precise die-cutting add decorative and structural details, while cardboard stiffeners provide shape to finished boxes.
