Story behind the Craft

Rooted in Vidarbha, Maharashtra, the Karvati Kinar saree derives its name from karvat (saw), mirroring the serrated temple borders woven along its edges. Artisans craft the piece on a three-shuttle pit loom, joining a raw Tussar silk body with a vibrant cotton border. Traditionally worn for sacred rituals, this GI-tagged handloom art now blends wild forest-reared silk with modern motifs while honoring its heritage.
