The Craft

Sujani is an intricate handloom technique where a double cloth is woven simultaneously on a single loom and beam. As the fabric is created inch by inch, raw cotton filling is inserted into the pockets directly on the loom, eliminating the need for any external stitching.

Story behind the Craft

Over 250 years ago, weavers in Bharuch created a clever way to make warm, padded quilts directly on a handloom. Instead of sewing two pieces of cloth together and stuffing them later, they learned to weave double layers of fabric at the same time.
