The roots of the duri can be traced back centuries across the Indian subcontinent. It evolved from the traditional practice of painting intricate geometric and spiritual folk-art patterns directly onto mud floors, often as a way to ward off negative energies. Over time, these motifs were translated into woven yarn, creating portable, durable, and washable floor coverings. While Varanasi became renowned worldwide for its luxurious Banarasi silk brocades, the surrounding rural communities developed the duri as a practical and essential part of everyday life.
