The Craft

Bandha is a traditional yarn tie-resist dyeing technique using cotton or mulberry silk yarn. Groups of yarn are tied according to a pre-designed pattern using threads, dried leaves, or other materials before dyeing. The tied sections resist colour, creating distinctive monochromatic or multicoloured patterns through repeated tying and dyeing.

Story behind the Craft

In Nuapatna, Bandha weaving is closely linked to the Khandua tradition and the Jagannath Temple. According to temple records, Khandua textiles were created using Bandha to depict verses from Jayadeva's Geeta Govinda, under the patronage of Puri's Gajapati Kings. The textiles were offered to deities, and the tradition continues today.
