The four-year Fashion Design programme, NIFT’s flagship programme, offers a holistic foundation in design with a focused approach to apparel. The curriculum develops design sensitivity by balancing global fashion aesthetics with an Indian perspective, while addressing the diverse requirements of couture, prêt-à-porter, exports, niche markets and handcrafting. Through structured learning, industry interaction, internships, projects, seminars and industry visits, students develop creative and technical capabilities informed by historical, socio-cultural and contemporary contexts. The programme prepares graduates to respond to evolving fashion practices and emerging sectors through design innovation, technical expertise and an understanding of the fashion industry.

The Department of Fashion Design offers two Interdisciplinary Minors (IDMs)—Fashion Expression for undergraduate students and Film & Fashion Appreciation for postgraduate students. The undergraduate pathway introduces students from other disciplines to fashion history, fashion drawing, pattern making, garment construction and fashion product development, providing a foundation for conceptualising and creating fashion products. The postgraduate pathway explores the intersections of fashion, design and cinema through costume design, film fashion and image, and fashion styling. Students enrolled in Fashion Design may, in turn, pursue Interdisciplinary Minors offered by other academic departments to broaden their learning beyond their primary discipline.
