Foundation Programme

The Foundation Programme develops foundational capabilities through a range of interconnected areas. Art and Design Aesthetics builds visual literacy and critical observation; Visualisation and Representation develops drawing, spatial reasoning and visual communication; Fashion Basics introduces the structure, processes and terminology of the fashion industry; and Material Studies develops an understanding of materials, their properties and fabrication through hands-on exploration. Professional Communication and Presentation Techniques strengthen verbal communication and presentation skills, while Digital Design and Communication introduces photography, image editing, digital design and emerging AI-enabled tools. For Fashion Technology students, the foundation also introduces textiles, data handling, garment construction, engineering drawing, fashion orientation and Elements of Technology, establishing a basis for apparel manufacturing and emerging technologies.

The programme encourages students to develop creative confidence, innovative thinking and an entrepreneurial outlook. Creative Thinking Skills introduces frameworks and techniques for observation, ideation, experimentation and problem-solving, enabling students to develop and translate ideas into feasible solutions. Entrepreneurial Mindset & Awareness introduces the entrepreneurial ecosystem and the role of entrepreneurship in driving innovation, sustainability and social impact. Together with professional communication, digital skills and experiential learning, these areas prepare students to engage confidently with diverse academic and professional contexts.

General Electives (GEs) at NIFT are interdisciplinary, credit-based courses that complement students' core programmes by broadening their academic, creative, and professional perspectives. They provide opportunities to explore diverse subjects beyond one's specialisation, fostering holistic learning, critical thinking, and transferable skills.
