The first-ever “Shilpshala” is being organized by the Department of Design Space, National Institute of Fashion Technology, Panchkula from 9th -11th February 2022. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Amandeep Singh Grover, Director, NIFT, Panchkula where he welcomed all the artisans, experts, faculty, and students.
The main objective of the workshop was to create awareness amongst the artisans about the policies and special schemes being provided by the government of India through its various agencies like DC Handlooms, DC Handicrafts, and premier design institutions like NIFT.
The group of experts from diverse backgrounds was part of this workshop from Mr. Sanjay Gupta, Deputy Director, Weaver Service Centre, Panipat who highlighted various government schemes for practicing handloom weavers to design professionals like Mr. Harpreet Padam, Co-founder, Unlike Design who spoke about designing contemporary products using traditional crafts skills. On similar lines Mr. Ashok Kumar Meena, Senior Assistant Director, Handicrafts from Rewari enlightened artisans about funding and financial support offered by the Government of India. The workshop also has veterans and national award winner artisan from Haryana Mr. Mahaveer Prasad Bondwal and his Son Mr. Chandrakant who have won a national award in wood carving from Bahadurgarh to share their journey and experience with the upcoming artisans. Mr. Lokesh Ghai, a craft expert from Ahmedabad discussed, how Indian crafts have huge potential in the international market and how artisans can develop their portfolio to cater to the international market including museums, exhibitions, and trade fairs.
