As part of the celebration of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotasav, the Arts and Cultural Department of
Government of Meghalaya invited NIFT Shillong to participate in the ‘India @75- Meghalaya @50’
event at Kongthong Village on the 13th November 2021. This special event at Kongthong was also a
precursor to the ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’ – Tribal Pride Week, launched by Prime Minister Narendra
Modi on 15 th November 2021.
The Ministry of Tourism has nominated Kongthong, Meghalaya's whistling and song village, for entry to
UNWTO’s 'Best Tourism Village' for its striking location and its tradition where each resident of the
village is assigned a tune that also serve as a unique identifier for the resident.
At the event, NIFT Shillong handed over 75 National Tricolors (Flags) to the residents of Kongthong
Village to celebrate 75 years of Independence and also to mark the Meghalaya State’s upcoming Golden
Jubilee celebrations in January 2022.
