Impulse: Bachelor of Fashion Design Graduation Show

The Fashion Design Department offers a 4 year under graduate degree programme aimed at addressing the needs of Indian apparel export segment, domestic manufacturing as well as Couture and pret-a-porter clothing segment. The industry relevant curriculum helps in building the desired skillsets and competencies among students pursuing the course with a mission to create a global identity in design. The hands-on experience enables students to conceptualize designs, create drapes and patterns and finally convert them into high quality garments for a specific target market. The exposure to various vertically integrated textile plants, garment manufacturing units, craft clusters, museums, industry internship, research projects, graduation projects and design collections, expert sessions with industry professionals allow students to build confidence and develop capabilities to address market needs, issues and concerns when they join fashion industry.

Year 1: Common Foundation programme

Year 2: introduces students to various aspects of fashion design vocation like fashion illustration, sustainability, basic ornamentation techniques, pattern making, draping, history, garment construction, textile knowledge. Students are also required to select any one Deepening specialization between Luxury and Styling & Image Creation besides studying Inter disciplinary minors. This followed by hands-on experience in Craft research and documentation.

Year 3: helps students to build further on the skillsets achieved in second year by studying advanced courses in fashion illustration, structured garments, knits, couture, celebrity culture and many more. Industry internship upon collection of third year helps to understand complexities and nuances of the working of apparel/ fashion industry and is an invaluable experience in terms of building confidence, personality and overall understanding of the garmenting sector.

Year 4: is the final year where students study electives besides specialized courses. The final semester culminates either as a industry sponsored Graduation project or Design Collection. At the end of the final year, students present their collections in a Fashion Show entitled “IMPULSE”.

Hearty Congratulations to the graduating class of Fashion Design 2021. This day holds great significance for you as Individuals, your teachers and parents as you complete the formal level of the under-graduate education and take a leap into the professional league. Fashion today has become more dynamic than ever as it advances on to a virtual platform. The year 2021 has presented many challenges impelling us to effectively innovate and strategize optimising the available resources. At NIFT, I hope we have prepared you to take on the next phase of your life by the horns, help you overcome adversity and set example as vibrant, dynamic and consummate professionals, besides being responsible citizens. 

 
Perfection, perseverance and passion along with (ethical) professionalism are key elements for success. The four-year journey in the department may have involved some unpalatable moments but in essence, that should only have helped lay a solid foundation to build upon. You would have made some indomitable bonds and created memories to cherish. I hope you assimilated all the hard and easy learnings and will utilise them to the benefit of the industry as also society and contribute towards the progress of our nation. The spirit showcased at Impulse 2021 has demonstrated your hard work and flair for creativity. I take pride in dedicating this batch of 2021 to the Fashion Industry!
