The Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India has sanctioned INDIAsize project to develop standard body sizes for Indian apparel sector to address the prevailing disparities and inconsistencies in provided fits. The project will entail gathering anthropometric data pan India from more than 25000 (Twenty-Five Thousand) male and female persons between the age group of 15 years and 65 years using human safe 3D whole body scanning technology. The created body size chart will help national and international retailers and manufacturers to produce goods which are best suited for Indian body types and create a balance between demand and supply of well fitted garments.
Apart from apparel, the findings of the study will have ramifications across various sectors such as automotive, aerospace, fitness & sport, art, computer gaming, etc. where the insights from this data can produce ergonomically designed products which are well suited for the Indian population.

"The Indian apparel industry is poised for the next stage of growth in the coming years. As a growing industry, it is necessary for Indian apparels to develop its own standards to focus on quality for improving the local & global acceptability of our products. A fundamental element for any apparel is its ‘fit’. Under the guidance of Prime Minister Shri Narender Modi, we have initiated ‘INDIAsize’ project which is aimed at developing standard body sizes for the Indian apparel sector. It will place India in the league of nations like US, UK and Japan which have undertaken extensive anthropometric survey of their respective population to create their own body size charts. This indigenous body size chart will help both national and international retailers as well as manufacturers to produce merchandise that are best suited for Indian body types. This research on sizing chart will also assist many other industries in their product development."
"The INDIA size survey will result in a creation of Size identification number for a customer through mapping, categorization and defining of their body size. This will help manufacturer to produce goods suited for the body size of the target consumer and help consumer to identify size that will be best suited for them resulting in a match and hence improved sales. Apart from apparel, the findings of the study will also have applications across various other industries where the insights from this data can produce ergonomically designed products which are well suited for the Indian population."
"NIFT is proud to be associated with MoT initiative of ‘INDIAsize’. This is a scientific exercise where anthropometric data is collected from a sample population, using human safe 3D whole body scanner technology, in order to create a standardised size chart. This will follow all international protocols of national sizing survey and will be a true representative of the Indian population, which can then be adopted by the apparel industry."
